Rant - No change to partner award reservation - except rebooking!

I have award ticket sfo-lax-tyo. Called to try to change sfo-lax flight (same day earlier flight). Very rude agent told me cannot change award res can only cancel and rebook! After insisting 3 times and refusing to transfer me to a sup - finally did. She also informed me the same thing and when I asked if partner desk was open (JL involved -trying to get to a competent agent even tho not involving JL) said she is concierge and sup on duty!
So unless the policy has changed in the last few weeks - something I've always been able to do is no longer available?
Reason for change - fare bucket needed for early flight wasn't available and now is. Even tho legal connection my existing flight risks not making the F JAL flight.
So has there been a policy change that I don't know about?

Not a policy change, but most agents believe this. They've gotten warned and threatened over changing a single segment on an AA-only award where pricing is handled differently, and mistakenly believe the same applies to partner awards (including partner awards with an AA segment).

Don't ever argue with the agent, it is not worth it, just call back to speak to someone else. Although there's a good chance you'll get another agent that holds the same mistaken belief. Sometimes it takes 3 calls, and sometimes it takes 30.

Thank you. I did try to get to an agent who was more educated, mentioned it is not a straight AA award, asked for the partner desk (in the hopes of geting someone who knew), all to no avail. What I was surprised about was how rude they both were :sigh:
Do you happen to knw the code that is necessary to combine AA with a partner - I thought it might be T for economy - but hard to see the code and when I try again it may be gone (as it was when I first made the reservation)
But thanks again to confirm I am not losing my mind!

Are you sure the new flight has sAAver award availability that makes it combinable?
Best way to check is look on Alaska award booking or BA Avios if the flight is bookable there. No way to be 100% sure just using AA.com anymore

Concur... same situation of trying to add an AA segment to a JL award... was told that there had to be JAL availability which made no sense (DCA to JFK). Wanted to reprice entire itinerary on AA metal for 305,000 miles. I was told my only option was to buy the connecting flight with no checked through baggage and no protection if it was delayed. Again, not true... I believe they can combine paid flights with a mileage flight on the same PNR. Agent was pretty rude as well. Hung up.

Next agent gave me same story... when I pushed back (nicely) about saver award on AA + partner should work, she said she would give it a try... and indeed... it did. She claimed it was "a miracle." I wanted to say... yes AA following their own policies is a miracle. Alas, I just thanked her profusely. Ticketed.

Yes, exactly - I was trying to have them check if the proper award was available but didn't get that far as they refused to even talk about it just kept telling me I couldn't change .......

Yes, the change in he rudeness and refusal to listen is really astonishing - they used to have such nice agents. Sigh Glad you got one that would listen.

I understanding is that they can only combine a paid ticket with an award ticket at time of booking cannot be added to an existing award ticket reservation.
