P3 Firmware update fails (2024)

Hi all

I am trying to upgrade a P3 MCU 1.29 to 1.54 and\or 1.60 (No SVGA option installed).

In advanced mode I just checked “LOAD MCU” & hit “send checked items to P3”.

Now the relays click every 2 seconds and I keep seeing 2 messages forever:

1. “Attempting to connect P3 on port COM1 at 38400 bit/s” in the P3’s utility window,

2. ”Checking for SVGA” on the P3’s screen.

No uploading is performed & I can terminate the loop only with the “cancel” button.

Environment:

-P3 utility ver 1.16.3.1

-P3 is only connections to 13.8v from external supply & computer (RS232 cable).

-All files are present in the “P3 firmware” folder (Windows 10 1803 build 17134).

Any ideas please?

Thanks in advance,

Isaac, 4Z1TL (ex-4z4tl)

Hello,

the computer is not connected to the P3, this is why you see the messagge "Attemping...".

If you do the "Test Connection" with the P3 utility you must see a message with the actual MCU version and RS232 connection speed.

Check your RS232 connection.

If you connect only the P3 to the PC, use the RS232 port on the reare of P3 with the label PC, is a female DB9 port.

If you have the P3 connected to the K3, be sure to have the Y Cable and both port on the rear of P3 connected.

Do the test connection on the P£ utility with all the serial port available on your PC until you see the messagge with the MCU version and the correct speed at coonnection.

If the P3 is seen via K3, be sure to have set the RS232 speed at 38400 in the K3 menu.

Also, try different cable, maybe the one you are using is not good.

Thanks, best regards, Graziano

Thanks for the suggestions Graziano.

Sorry, but I thought it was obvious that communication between the PC & P3 exist, because if there weren’t any, the buttons in P3 utility to upload would have been inactive (grayed out) & I wouldn’t have been able to try to upload anything.

FWIW, 38400 works FB when I start P3 utility against the P3 & test the ports. I did it with 3 different PORTS, on 2 distinct PCs, with 3 different cables (straight RS-232 & USB cables -not KUSB though ).

All behave the same: I get the message with baud rate & MCU version etc. Also I can send commands to the P3 from the Command tester tab in the P3 utility. I get replies & I see the effects performed.

So definitely It doesn’t seem a communications problem & that’s exactly what’s so weird.

The P3 is identified, it reacts to commands sent via RS-232 cables of the variety mentioned , and only the upload of firmware is stuck in the endless loop. (It constantly searches for the SVGA option which is not installed).

Someone suggested I should use only the KUSB cable, but I have to admit that this sounds very peculiar. Usually when USB to RS232 fails, the remedy is straight RS-232 & not the opposite…
