However, Dexter began losing its way before season 8 aired.

Season 8's finale showed Dexter mercy-killing his sister Deb in a hospital, dropping her body in the ocean during a hurricane, and abandoning his son, Harrison. Dexter then went to live out his days as a lumberjack in Oregon.

Dexter Morgan Jr. is an envisioned character in Season Three of the Showtime series DEXTER. After Dexter Morgan learns that his girlfriend, Rita Bennett, is pregnant, he visualizes his child as a killer, just like himself.

Why Did Dexter's Showrunners Kill Off Rita's Character? Rita often felt like more of a plot device than a fully realized character.

Hannah does not make an appearance in Dexter: New Blood, set 10 years after the original series. However, the now-teenage Harrison tells Dexter that Hannah died of pancreatic cancer. After her death, Harrison was placed into foster care, where he discovered a letter that Dexter sent to Hannah.

The Dexter universe is expanding again with a new prequel series—and possibly one or two additional spinoffs. The Wall Street Journal confirmed in July 2023 that Showtime is developing multiple Dexter shows after the success of sequel series Dexter: New Blood, which premiered in November 2021.

'Dexter: New Blood' has ended but don't expect a Harrison spin-off — for now. Executive producer Clyde Phillips wouldn't mind doing another killer spin-off, but there are no plans at the moment. Hence, the show really needed the second chance it got with Dexter: New Blood. The series picks up ten years after the end of Dexter. During this time, Morgan has built a new life for himself in a small town in New York.
